Lesson 1A: Why we believe the Book of John? A Principle of the First Mention

Learning Competencies:

  1. Demonstrates a clear understanding of the distinct theological, historical, and literary features of the Gospel of John, while applying sound biblical hermeneutics to affirm Jesus Christ as fully God and fully human, in contrast to Gnostic and Arian teachings.

  1. Demonstrates a growing devotional relationship with Jesus by actively engaging in prayer, personal reflection on Scripture, and faith-based actions that align with Christian values.
  2. Understands the core practices of a devotional life with Jesus, including prayer, Bible study, reflection, and faith-driven action, and recognizes their biblical foundations.

Lesson 3: When Change is for the Better

  1. Reflect on Jesus’ actions at the wedding in Cana and the cleansing of the temple to recognize the call to personal transformation, developing a Christ-centered sense of self-worth and the need to remove life’s impurities.
  2. Explain how Jesus’ actions in John 2:1–22 reveal the importance of transformation and spiritual cleansing.
  3. Appreciate one’s value and identity as rooted in a personal relationship with Jesus.
  4. Illustrate areas in life where personal change is needed by creating a reflection or visual representation (e.g., drawing, journal entry, or symbolic object).

Lesson 4A: Grace is All-inclusive

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  1. The learner recognizes and responds to God’s all-inclusive grace by deepening faith and love in personal relationships, drawing insight from Jesus’ encounters with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman.
  2. Explain how Jesus’ interactions with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman reveal God’s inclusive love and the role of faith in a transformed life.
  3. Appreciate how God’s grace shapes the way we love and trust others—especially in relationships with parents, friends, and God.
  4. Recommend specific ways to nurture love and faith in one key relationship through a written or spoken reflection.

Lesson 4B: Grace and Salvation: The Principle of First Mention

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  1. Demonstrates an understanding of the foundational concepts of grace and salvation as first revealed in Scripture, distinguishing their theological significance through Systematic Theology—particularly in the study of Soteriology—by tracing the scriptural usage, phases, and paradigms of salvation, and articulating the connection between grace, faith, and salvation in the Christian experience.
  2. Identify and explain the scriptural foundation and theological terms related to grace and salvation as introduced in the principle of first mention.
  3. Reflect on and express the personal significance of receiving God’s grace and salvation, demonstrating appreciation for their role in the Christian life.
  4. Create and present a simple visual or verbal presentation (e.g., timeline, diagram, or oral explanation) that traces the phases of salvation (justification, sanctification, glorification) and shows how grace, faith, and salvation are interconnected.

Lesson 5: The Struggle to be Real

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  • Demonstrate growth in authentic faith by reflecting on the royal official’s encounter with Jesus, learning to trust God beyond appearances and apply faith in real-life situations.
  • Explain how the royal official’s experience with Jesus teaches important lessons about faith and authenticity.
  • Value the importance of being real before God and trusting Him even when things are uncertain.
  • Apply a personal faith response to a current life challenge through prayer, journaling, or a simple testimony.

Lesson 6: Putting the Past Behind

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  • Embraces the hope of new life through Jesus’ healing power by understanding the significance of resurrection in overcoming past hurts and encouraging others toward healing with support from family and friends.
  • Explain how the power of resurrection in Jesus’ healing offers hope for overcoming life’s biggest problems.
  • Value the importance of forgiveness and support from loved ones in the healing process.
  • Advise someone experiencing hurt from their past by sharing comforting words or practical support inspired by Jesus’ example.

Lesson 7: Finding the Sacred in the Common

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  • Discerns the presence and power of Jesus in the ordinary experiences of life by recognizing the inner hunger caused by His absence and valuing how He alone satisfies the soul.
  • Explain how the absence of Jesus creates restlessness and unmet longing in human life.
  • Appreciate how Jesus brings fulfillment even through simple, daily experiences.
  • Apply personal gratitude and trust in Jesus by recognizing His presence in the ordinary routines of life.

Lesson 8A: The Great "I AM"

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  • Recognizes Jesus as the eternal “I AM” by exploring His identity in Scripture, deepening their trust in His unchanging presence, and embracing the freedom that comes from a relationship with Him.
  • Explain how Jesus’ “I AM” statements reveal His divine identity and role in meeting the needs of humanity.
  • Value the truth that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, offering constant hope and assurance.
  • Apply the freedom and security found in Christ to everyday decisions and relationships.

Lesson 8B: Parables - The Principle of First Mention

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze and evaluate various methods of parable interpretation by comparing the medieval allegorical approach to modern interpretive principles, in order to discern the central message of the parables within its biblical, historical, and theological contexts.
  • Identify and explain the key features of medieval allegorical interpretation and modern interpretive principles for parables.
  • Appreciate the importance of interpreting parables in ways that honor their original biblical, historical, and theological contexts.
  • Apply sound modern interpretive principles to a selected parable to accurately determine and communicate its central message.

Lesson 9: The Good Shepherd on Trial

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  • Demonstrate Christlike care and guidance in daily life by reflecting on Jesus as the Good Shepherd and applying His example of love, protection, and leadership in personal relationships.
  • Understands the qualities and role of Jesus as the Good Shepherd and how these relate to spiritual leadership and daily living.
  • Value the presence and guidance of Jesus in life and desires to reflect His love and care in relationships with others.
  • Practices being an “under-shepherd” by showing compassion, guidance, and protection to others at home, school, and community.

Lesson 10: Therapy of Thankfulness

Time Allocation: (1 week)

  • Demonstrate the ability to cultivate a heart of thankfulness by reflecting on Jesus’ raising of Lazarus and practicing emotional awareness and self-regulation that glorifies God in everyday actions.
  • Identify and explain the emotional responses of the characters in the story of Lazarus, particularly Jesus’ response, and how these relate to managing one's own feelings.
  • Internalize the value of thankfulness as a way to shift one’s focus from negativity to God’s goodness, even in painful or uncertain situations.
  • Develop a one-week personal reflection and self-evaluation graph that shows emotional highs and lows and how thankfulness or lack thereof influenced daily behavior.
