Question: There is a mysterious story that suggests Jesus' death on the cross involved a journey to the people who had died before Him, where He preached and revealed Himself as the Messiah to them. Is there any biblical evidence supporting this line of thought?
Thank you for your insightful question. The idea you're referring to is sometimes connected to a passage in 1 Peter 3:18-20, where it says:
"For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, He went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits—to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built." (NIV)
Some interpret this passage as Jesus preaching to the spirits of those who had died. However, from the biblical narrative which the Adventist line of thought stands, this doesn't mean Jesus went to preach to the dead after His crucifixion. Instead, it refers to Christ's Spirit speaking through Noah to the people of that time, warning them of the coming judgment. These "imprisoned spirits" were those who were spiritually captive to sin during Noah's day.
Ecclesiastes 9:5 makes it clear that the dead know nothing: "For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten." We (Adventists) believe that death is a state of unconsciousness until the resurrection, so there would be no preaching to those who have died.
Thus, it is safe to say that there is no biblical support for the idea that Jesus went on a journey to preach to the dead after His death on the cross. Instead, His sacrifice provided salvation to all who would believe, both those who lived before and after His crucifixion.
