When anthropologist began to study the bones of the men who died at the St. Stephen monastery near Jerusalem, they found that the monks had been healthy except for one problem. Most of the monks’ kneecaps were worn smooth and showed signs of arthritis. The cause? In part, long hours of prayer on cold stone floors.
